About Me

Whatever medium I am working in – playwriting, film, or television – I think of myself, first and foremost, as a storyteller. One who cannot avoid comedy (not that I really try). It’s how I see the world. I love to watch my characters strive eagerly, earnestly to accomplish whatever goal they are seeking. Only it never goes exactly the way they had planned, due not only to the conflicting desires of others but also due to their own imperfect humanity. If there is a way I would characterize my plays, I would call them ‘painful comedies.’

I was fortunate enough to begin my professional life on Broadway. During those eight years I was privileged to work as an actor, a stage manager, a casting director, a development executive, and assistant to the producer on a number of Broadway shows.

This is me in 1956 in the original Broadway production of The Diary of Anne Frank, in the role of Peter van Daan. With my cat and Anne Frank, portrayed here by Israeli actress Dina Doronne.

Later, in motion pictures and television I became a writer of both comedies and dramas, a series creator, show runner, producer, director, lyricist, and Emmy Award winner. The Emmy was for the successful hour-long comedy series Love, American Style, which I co-created and wrote for ABC TV with my writing partner, Jim Parker.
